Research Energy stands apart from other industries not only for its capital intensity but also for the role of transportation infrastructures in shaping the overall structure and dynamics of the industry. Marine Transportation plays an essential role in the Center's perspective on globalization and on the increasingly important interface between the energy and environmental agenda. CEMTPP takes an integrated view of transport by sea or pipelines (Global Energy Governance) in the energy industry value chain. The CEMTPP 'Marine Transportation 2030' research program brings together eminent scholars and practitioners from North America and Europe around an exploration of several contrasted plausible and challenging futures for the industry. The first months of work have led to a '6 + 1' program structure in which six 'drivers of change' are explored and brought together through one scenarios development exercise. Highlighting the growing interconnection between the 'on shore' and 'on sea' policy and strategy agendas, the six drivers of change deal with (1) Ports governance and global inter-modal value chains, (2) technology as a game changer, (3) the evolving environmental policy agenda, (4) the implications of the rapid melting of the Arctic ice cap, (5) international governance, (6) short sea shipping. Other CEMTPP activities in Marine Transportation include a project in development with the IUCN Center for Environmental Law on Green Shipping in the Black Sea (tba) and work on the importance of Ports in the urban energy and environmental agenda. The Marine Transportation program is directed by Professor Albert Bressand, Executive Director of CEMTPP. CEMTPP expresses its gratitude to the Connecticut Maritime Association (CMA) and to Don Frost, CMA editor and former chairman, for their kind cooperation.
