Carbon Markets Discussion with Adam Raphaely

TFS Energy's Carbon and Renewable Energy Broker and SIPA alum, Adam Raphaely, returned to SIPA to discuss trends in global carbon markets.
The conversation ranged from the key drivers of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme and Clean Development Mechanism projects to developments
in US carbon mitigation policies.

Bloomberg hosted 35 SEA members for a tour of its headquarters in Manhattan, followed by a discussion of recent developments in commodities
markets and advances in the technologies used in trading around the world.

Daniel Lerch visited SIPA to discuss the policy recommendations in his book, Post-Carbon Cities. He focused upon the need for local
governments to develop plans to simultaneously cope with the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the prospect of peak oil.

The New York Independent System Operator hosted SEA once again for a tour of the facility and a discussion of deregulated energy markets.

Tour of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Facility Thursday May 10, 2007
SEA members visited Entergy's Indian Point nuclear facility in Buchannan, NY. The visit included a presentation by Patrick Falciano,
Senior Instructor at Indian Point as well as a walking tour of the facility, including the spent fuel storage area. SEA thanks Entergy,
Mr. Falciano, and everyone else who made this visit possible.
Discussion with Michelle Billig Director of Political Risk at PIRA Energy Group Wednesday April 11, 2007
Michelle Billig joined SEA members to discuss career options in political risk analysis within the energy industry. Ms. Billig discussed
her own career path, which has included stints at the US Department of Energy, International Energy Agency, the Council on Foreign
Relations, and Deutsche Bank.
Third Annual Energy Symposium Friday March 23, 2007
SEA partnered with the Columbia University Business School Energy Club to host the 2007 Energy Symposium. The event focused on
cutting-edge developments in the energy industry and technologies that will play a growing role in the world's energy future. The
Symposium's keynote speakers were Luiz Antonio Costa Pereira, Executive Director for natural gas marketing and commercialization at
Petrobras, and Brian Ward, Managing Director & Chief Risk Officer, GE Energy Financial Services. The half-day event featured panels
on Renewable Electricity, Ethanol, LNG, and Nuclear Power.
SEA thanks the Symposium's generous sponsors, including Petrobras, GE, CEMTPP and the Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy.
Texas Spring Break March 12-19, 2007
Ten SEA members traveled to Texas to see aspects of the US energy infrastructure first-hand. The week began with a visit to the Ocean Star
offshore oilrig and museum in Galveston. Two days in Austin were filled with visits to ERCOT, Austin Energy's headquarters, two power
plants, and an intimate discussion with Texas Comptroller Susan Combs about state energy policy.
The students returned to Houston to spend a day at Shell Pipeline Company, attending presentations by engineers about operating and
maintaining the company's nationwide pipeline system. The SPLC visit culminated with a tour of the company's pipeline control rooms.
The SEA members spent the following day at ExxonMobil's Baytown refinery, the largest and most sophisticated refinery in the US. The visit
included presentations about the refinery and ExxonMobil's marine transportation activities and a driving tour of the refinery complex. The students ended their time in Texas at the rodeo before returning to New York. Seminar with Jerry Eyster, Senior Vice President, GE Energy Financial Services Thursday March 8, 2007 Mr. Eyster met with more than 30 SEA members to discuss the impact of potential policy scenarios on the development of cleaner and more efficient coal technologies. Mr. Eyster has more than 30 years of experience analyzing coal, electric power and environmental issues. He shared his outlook on the long-term future of coal in the US energy mix, including the influence of various carbon prices on this forecast. U.S. Department of Energy January 12, 2007 SEA members met with US Deputy Assistant Secretaries of Energy Alan Hegburg and David Pumphrey during SIPA’s annual Washington, DC Career Conference. On January 12, SEA members gathered at the US Department of Energy for a networking lunch with Presidential Management Fellows at DOE, followed by a discussion with Mr. Hegburg, Mr.
Pumphrey, and Angelia Piscitelli of DOE's Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence. The participants offered their insights into
careers in the energy sector and as the conversation touched on issues of energy security around the world.
New York Independent System Operator November 6, 2006
SEA's first trip to regional energy infrastructure was a great success. On November 6, 15 SEA members traveled to the New York Independent
System Operator outside of Albany to see the nation's second-largest ISO. We thank NYISO's Ken Klapp for an insightful presentation about
the process of developing and managing a competitive electricity market for the state.
